I’ve had a love affair with numbers and data and systems and technology for as long as I can remember.
As a kid on long car trips, I made up maths problems and did them in my head just to relieve the boredom, and on school holidays, I spent hours teaching my computer how to write my name in Basic (a VERY old programming language).
In high school, maths was the only class I ever got thrown out of (for talking too much) because I was weeks ahead of the class and bored out of my skull.
And in university, I loved studying programming, and even managed to pull off a 105% on my final programming assigment.
I’ve been building websites for more than 15 years, running online businesses for more than 10, and teaching myself how to use gazillions of software programs since the very first moment I got my hands on a computer.
But it’s taken me 20 years to realise that my excitement about all of these things combines beautifully in the world of digital marketing.I’m a geek and proud of it!
But it’s not just about digital marketing
You might think with such a predilection for so many nerdy things that I’d be the kind of person who counts the number of tiles on the wall in the bathroom, or who hides away in a darkened room for weeks on end with my eyes glued to a computer screen.
But I’m not. (Ok, mostly I’m not.)
I don’t just love digital marketing for the sake of itself.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say that data and tech are not inherently useful.
Without a bigger picture to tie them into, they’re actually just a distraction from the things that really matter.
What gets me excited is the power they have to inform, direct and improve our lives, and our businesses.
From your unread emails to your website traffic, your email open rates to your search engine ranking, your followers on Facebook to your business profits, digital information helps you see what’s working – and what isn’t – and make better decisions.
And once you’re clear on your direction and your goals, you can use digital marketing to seriously turbo-charge your results.
And that’s why I love it.
I come from a long line of teachers
My Mum was a teacher, my Dad was a teacher, my mother-in-law and my father-in-law were teachers, and when I was in Grade 4 I was sure I was going to be a teacher too.
As it turned out, that wasn’t to be, and yet in almost every job I’ve ever had, I’ve ended up teaching people in some way.
I can’t help myself. I love sharing what I know.
And I get such a kick out of watching people’s eyes light up when they finally grasp something new, and see the possibilities.
Having run an online business selling tiny fanless computer hardware for more than 11 years, I’ve also learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t in business, and how to make better use of data and technology.
When we started out, I remember feeling totally overwhelmed by setting up the most basic features of my email service provider, and it took me five years to pluck up the courage to set up Google Analytics on our website (I tracked it the “hard” way instead).
These days, I know Analytics like the back of my hand, I can devise a complete online marketing strategy on a post-it note and there’s nothing I can’t make WordPress do.
